Stockholm, Sweden, April 5, 2022 — digip has filed the first API-enabled European Union Trademark (EUTM) application with EUIPO. This is the first application of its kind filed in Europe, representing a stride forward in EUIPO's efforts to speed up and simplify its processes.

digip filed a trademark application for the term #firstapitrademark in class 25 (Nice Classification) on April 1. Viktor Johansson, digip’s CEO, said that the mark will be used on clothing items to commemorate the first filing milestone.

First API filed EUIPO trademark #firstapitrademark!

"This is incredibly exciting for us," Johansson said. “The API is a powerful tool to help simplify the trademark application process and we are thrilled to be the first company to use it to submit an EUTM application."

Last year, digip and several other EU-based trademark firms joined the first pilot group to help develop and test EUIPO’s beta API interactions. With the new API, trademark firms will be able to integrate EUTM trademark filing into their native IT systems—an important step towards automating manual processes that add no value to the client or legal representative, according to digip CTO Victor Fredriksson.

The API eliminates much of the red tape associated with filing a trademark application, saving time for administrators and allowing them to focus on higher-value activities. This allows trademark firms to offer faster and better service at a lower price point.

“The effort behind the development and launch of this API is immense and from a technical perspective, working with EUIPO through 2021 has really been educational and greatly rewarding,” Fredriksson shared.

“It’s a good feeling reaching this point, as this helps us with our mission to automate the entire trademark application process from selecting a brand to securing it to its true owner,” he added.

digip strives to be at the forefront of trademark innovation and help make brand protection more accessible in the wake of global market boom, said Dennis Singstedt, digip’s Platform Architect.

“In order to lead we must be different. Making the first API call is a huge milestone to revolutionize an otherwise traditional industry.”

The API is currently being tested by members of the pilot group ahead of a wider rollout.
